John Niffenegger, M.D.
John H. Niffenegger, M.D. is a Harvard trained vitreoretinal surgeon specializing in macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, surgery of retinal detachment, macular hole, macular pucker and posterior segment trauma. A magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College, Dr. Niffenegger received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University followed by residency and fellowship in Retinal Diseases and Surgery at Harvard Medical School's Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Dr. Niffenegger has served on the boards of the Lighthouse of Manasota for the Visually Impaired and the Florida Society of Ophthalmology. He has published on macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment and retinal degenerations and has spoken at national and international meetings including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the combined meeting of the American Association of Retinal Specialists, the Macula Society, the Retina Society, and the Club Jules Gonin, as well as the Florida Ophthalmological Society.
Dr. Niffenegger has participated in research and national clinical trials for treatments of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, ocular melanoma and retinopathy of prematurity. Together with Dr. Wong, he founded Retina Associates of Sarasota. Recognized as a U.S. News and World Report Best Doctor, Dr. Niffenegger has also been awarded Top Doctor Award by the Sarasota Magazine.
