Ryan Shields, M.D.
Dr. Ryan Shields joined the Retina Group of Florida after completing his Vitreoretinal Fellowship at Associated Retinal Consultants/Beaumont in Royal Oak, Michigan. Beforehand, Dr. Shields completed an accelerated six-year combined Bachelor’s of Science and Doctor of Medicine at Youngstown State University/Northeast Ohio Medical University. He graduated Summa Cum Laude and Alpha Omega Alpha, respectively. During his medical school tenure, he received numerous honors, including the Ted Voneida Neuroscience award, Pathology Student award, Parkson Foundation Scholarship for Academic Excellence, Excellence in Microbiology Pasteur award, and Outstanding Achievement award. Additionally, he was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.

Following medical school, he completed his internship at Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego, California, and his ophthalmology training at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. While at Stanford, he was awarded the Marmor-Blumenkranz Ophthalmology Residents Research prize for outstanding resident research and was involved in the mentorship of numerous medical students through the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society mentorship and Stanford Mentorship Academy for Resident Training programs. He is Board-Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Shields has contributed to dozens of presentations at international meetings and publications in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, Retina, Ophthalmology Retina, Ophthalmic Surgery Lasers and Imaging Retina, and Journal of Vitreoretinal Diseases. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). Dr. Shields is also a member of the Christian Ophthalmology Society (COS). His hobbies include water sports, golfing, traveling, reading, and movies.
